For Kings Dominion's 2022 season, the park announced Jungle X-Pedition, a full reimagining of the Safari Village land of the park. Included for the 2022 season was a brand-new 4D Free Spin Coaster named Tumbili, two rethemes for existing attractions, and a full rework of the existing restaurants and shopping in the area.
As a member of the marketing team, it was my job to help build excitement for the initial announcement for Jungle X as well as share other "discoveries" in the form of announcing new themes for our existing Mack Rides Bobsled Coaster and our Scrambler flat ride. I had the pleasure of working with passionate, creative people who had wonderful ideas, and it was my job to bring those ideas to life using a combination of digital art, graphic design, photo and videography, and motion design.
Announcement Teaser Campaign
The premise of Jungle X is that the whole area is an archeological site where temples themed around different animals were discovered. As we approached the media announcement for Tumbili and Jungle X-Pedition, we tweeted latitude and longitudinal coordinates every four days (playing off of the "4D" for the coaster type) of different real-world archeological sites. The following day, a corresponding poster was added to the construction wall in the park.
I designed each of the posters to resemble vintage travel posters, and included little teasers for other attractions in some of them as well. Pompeii's callout "The Volcanic Eruption..." plays off of the defunct coaster from our park, Volcano: the Blast Coaster. "The Cosmic Mystery" in the Stonehenge poster is a reference to another coaster in the area called Flight of Fear, which is a sci-fi alien themed coaster. And finally, Valley of the Kings' line "The Raided Crypts..." calls back to the different names for the HUSS Top Spin that used to be in the plot that Tumbili now sits in, initially called "Tomb Raider: Firefall" and "The Crypt," the new name given to the attraction when Kings Dominion was purchased by Cedar Fair.
Reptilian Retheme
Also in Jungle X-Pedition is a Mack Rides Bobsled, initially opened as Avalanche. For announcing the re-theme, we did a social media blast, where we released the above image in reverse order on Instagram, giving our fans only a sliver of the information at a time. Below is the order the chunks were shared in, which gave more and more information over the three hours that we ran the campaign.
The coaster trains have been repainted in a similar fashion to the rendering of the crocodile above with some slight changes, and the colors in the background are the exact swatches from the colors the track was painted.
Arachnidia Retheme
This is the video that we released on social to announce the re-theme of our Scrambler flat ride into Arachnidia. My contributions included creating the fantasy-style map, the spider doodle, arranging the wall, and all of the videography. The editing was done by my teammate, Allysa Harris, who is also responsible for the overall idea to create this video.
