Wayne Rooney All-Star Graphic
During downtime, I was encouraged to experiment with creating graphics for the team that they could use. Wayne Rooney was selected to be on the MLS All-Star team, and I created a graphic to promote his selection on social media channels. After creating the initial Twitter and Facebook graphic, I was asked to also make it in a square and vertical format for Instagram posts and stories. The graphic was posted on Twitter and Instagram, and Wayne Rooney himself even shared it on his own Instagram Story.
Portland Timbers Meme
When we faced off against the Portland Timbers, I was asked to create a version of the Oregon Trail’s “You died of dysentery” screen to say something cheeky after a hopeful win. I created an alternative version of this in case of a tie, but if we lost we weren’t going to post it. I was learning how to do motion design at the time and was excited to animate the text on the screen. After we won the game, the Instagram post was one of our most-watched videos at almost 14,000 views and was even shared by MLS meme pages.
Conference Standings Twitter Graphic
As the season was wrapping up, we wanted to create our own graphic for showing where we stood for heading to the playoffs. I created an InDesign file complete with GREP styles for the Eastern Conference teams that was updated weekly. The file was set up to change the text color for D.C. United and to highlight the teams that were slated to host the first-round games without any input from the designer after pasting in the information from the official MLS site.
Loudoun United Home Game Program
In 2019, our farm team, Loudon United, hit the field for the first time. Halfway through their season, they got their own stadium, Segra Field, in Loudon County, Virginia. Since the full-time graphic designers were busy on other projects, the majority of the team’s design work fell to me. The biggest project that I took on was creating programs for the home games. The first game at Segra Field had physical programs, and every game that followed had digital programs. I was responsible for compiling information about the home and away teams for every game and turning the information into the programs. Some of the branding was done at the beginning of the season, but I created the finalized version of Loudon United’s branding. The cover artwork was inspired by a poster design that the other graphic design intern and I worked on together.
